Abstract

Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) is a minimally invasive, well-tolerated procedure which provides samples for cytological and histological analysis. It is currently an important step in the management algorithms of patients with suspected pancreatic cancer, unexplained lymphadenopathy, a mediastinal mass, and other abdominal neoplasms. It has major advantages over other imaging techniques but the results are highly dependent upon individual experience and expertise. A variety of techniques have been examined and suggested to improve the tissue yield of EUS-FNA. Recently, new biopsy needles have been introduced to improve tissue yield by using histological material. The complication rate of EUS-FNA for solid lesions is rare in high volume centers, most of them being minor and self-limiting; however, cystic lesions are more vulnerable to serious complications and extra care and experience is needed. This chapter reviews the most relevant technical issues during EUS-FNA procedure.
