Abstract
With the recent, high-profile cases of abuse in Amish communities, it is important to examine the unique structure of these communities. This structure honors women but at times it may also make them vulnerable. How does the leadership handle abuse cases, and when might these leaders seek outside help for the purpose of dealing with perpetrators or for aiding victims in their recovery? Amish social structure provides unique ways in which women are valued and protected. However, in the most serious cases of abuse, this same structure may encourage delayed action against perpetrators and delayed help for victims. Several case studies illustrate how the Amish church has responded to abuse, and how, in recent years, the church has become more open to outside help.
