The Clinician’s Guide to the Treatment of Obesity

Part of the book series: Endocrine Updates ((ENDO))

Abstract

Obesity constitutes a significant and rapidly increasing public health challenge, and is associated with increased risks for many of the most serious diseases and conditions affecting modern populations, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and certain cancers. In addition to these significant health risks, obesity is also associated with social stigmatization, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, gout, and risks of infertility. In this chapter, we discuss the relationships between obesity and disease, in both children and adults, the underlying mechanisms, and the social and economic consequences.
