Abstract

Minimally invasive surgery was first introduced into clinical practice in the 1980s. As laparoscopic advances have continued to progress, improvements in endoscopic techniques and equipment have allowed therapeutic endoscopists to consider broader and less invasive techniques using a flexible endoscope. By merging concepts that arose from both laparoscopic and endoscopic applications, gastrointestinal surgeons and endoscopists have begun to develop endoscopic surgical procedures using incisionless techniques. The development of natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) in the context of ESD will be reviewed and recent trends in applying this technique to clinical gastrointestinal practice will be discussed.
