Abstract

Dietary and lifestyle interventions could help reduce the burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the United States. This chapter presents an overview of the effects of diet and nutritional status on the development and progression of CKD. Based on current research data, it aims to address the following problems: (1) the role of diet (salt and protein) and obesity on development and progression of CKD (2) the nutritional issues, especially obesity and malnutrition, that might be unique to uremia in advanced CKD (3) calcium-phosphorus status, parathyroid hormone, and vascular calcification in CKD. The chapter also presents a summary of diet recommendations for different levels of renal function. Specific dietary guidance regarding protein level and intakes of sodium, phosphorus, potassium, and fluids must be carefully individualized appropriately for the level of renal function.
