Against Global Archaeological Ethics: Critical Views from South America

Part of the Ethical Archaeologies: The Politics of Social Justice book series (ETHARCHAEOL,volume 1)

Abstract

The regulation of archaeological practice through formal ethical codes reflects a neocolonial global logic which is apolitical and objective. Encoding archaeological practice in terms of scientific logic contributes to deepening scientific internalization and distancing from local scenarios. Instead, ethical discussions of archaeological practice should be considered from a relational ethics which is basically sociopolitical, localized, and positioned in line with the needs of local groups. Such a relational ethics is critical, contingent, dynamic, and susceptible to negotiation and redefinition.
