Minimally Invasive Approaches to Colon and Rectal Disease

Abstract

Patients undergoing surgery for refractory ulcerative colitis (UC) are at high risk of postoperative complications, mainly due to aggressive immunosuppressive medical therapy, malnutrition, and the nature of the disease. Several efforts have been made during the last two decades to reduce surgical trauma and improve the quality of life of these patients, prominent among them, the increasing use of laparoscopic surgery. This chapter describes our minimally invasive surgical approach to UC patients based on our personal experience, and we will review some of the evidence in the literature.
