Abstract
Most patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are candidates for renal transplantation. Stage 4 or 5 CKD with a creatinine clearance of 20 ml/min or less is the point at which a patient may be listed and accrue waiting time for a deceased donor kidney. These patients are maintained on either hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Patients with an acceptable living donor may receive a “preemptive” transplant without ever starting dialysis, thus avoiding the risks associated with chronic dialysis. Causes of CKD are numerous, with the overwhelming majority caused by diabetes and hypertension.
