Guide to Psychological Assessment with African Americans

Abstract

The disparity in performance for African Americans as compared to other racial or ethnic groups on neuropsychological assessment measures is multifaceted. These disparities are discussed in the context of domain and measure specific normative performance for African Americans, and additional considerations related to incidence rates of related disease (e.g., differences in prevalence rates for cardiovascular diseases for African Americans) are presented within the context of a neuropsychological evaluation. Recommendations for clinical practice and suggestions for future study are presented within this chapter.
