Guide to Psychological Assessment with African Americans

Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of personality disorder (PD) assessment in African Americans. First, sociocultural issues unique to African Americans will be discussed, with particular attention paid to those issues that impact the presentation and perception of PD. Next, the concepts of PD and classification will be explained along with an overview of assessment tools available, including self-report measures and semistructured interviews. Then, a review of the major PD assessment instruments with established psychometric studies in African American samples will be presented. Finally, recommendations regarding PD assessment with African Americans for both clinical and research fields will conclude the chapter. This chapter emphasizes the use of well-validated instruments, taking a multimethod assessment approach, and examining and improving one’s standard of multicultural assessment practice when assessing African Americans for PD.
