Guide to Psychological Assessment with African Americans

Abstract

Early researchers concluded that clinical eating disorders were virtually nonexistent among “minorities” which led theorists to positively stereotype African Americans (particularly African-heritage women) as “protected” from eating disturbances and dysfunctions. However, in the past decade there has been increasing evidence to suggest that intragroup variation exists in the prevalence, symptom presentation, and correlates of eating dysfunctions for this population. The present chapter discusses and presents a sample of published interviews and self-report instruments designed to assess eating pathology. The psychometric relevance of these forms of assessment for eating disturbances in African-heritage Americans was discussed.
