Guide to Psychological Assessment with African Americans

Abstract

The American Psychological Association’s multicultural guidelines highlight the need for culturally sensitive psychological practice. Evidence-based assessment (EBA) emphasizes the use of research and theory to guide the selection of assessment domains, the manner in which the assessment is administered, the measures used, and the assessment process. In light of the above, this book presents the timely development of empirically based (and where empirical evidence is absent theoretically derived) recommendations for assessments with African Americans based on experts in the field. In this introductory chapter we discuss the challenges of conducting psychological assessments with African American clients as well as themes that were identified as this book was compiled.
