Anesthesia for Trauma

Abstract

Burn injuries are one of the most devastating forms of trauma worldwide. Not only do burn injuries affect almost all organ systems, the long-term sequelae of burns are significant and can be debilitating. Rapid, accurate assessment and prompt response to burns are keys to minimizing morbidity and mortality. The treatment of burn patients requires the presence of a well-organized team of caregivers who understand the complex consequences of burn injuries and who are adept at coordinating care. All of this begins with understanding the types of burns that can occur, being able to classify burns, and applying the principles of ATLS to burn patients. Beyond this, a keen understanding on the evolving physiological changes that result from the injury helps to guide therapy, intraoperative management, and recovery and rehabilitation in these patients.
