Abstract
This chapter introduces the reader to the major indications for colectomy, including colonic adenocarcinoma, the familial colon cancer syndromes, ulcerative colitis, Clostridium difficile colitis, diverticulosis, and diverticulitis. The evaluation, staging, and treatment of colon cancer are described in detail. The technique of different types of colectomy is discussed, as are the most common postoperative complications of these operations, particularly anastomotic leak. A classic case of diverticular bleeding is described and questions are provided for review.
