Abstract
The vulvar nevus was the first lesion to be recognized to have unique features so that it was originally designated as vulvar atypia. It is now clear that the vulva is one area of the skin, areolar in women, penis in men, and ear to have unique features attributed to the anatomic sites. In this chapter, the issue of vulvar nevus will be clearly defined with emphasis on the varying degree of cytologic atypia that occur on this special site as well as other features such as mitotic activity, maturation, and unusual growth feature that accompanied time of altering hormone during pregnancy. Emphasis will be placed on the differences between these lesions and dysplastic nevi as well as melanoma in situ. In addition, a review of malignant melanoma involving the vulva will be discussed.
