Pulmonary Manifestations of Rheumatic Disease

Abstract

Sjögren’s syndrome (SS) is a chronic systemic inflammatory syndrome whose hallmark is exocrine gland dysfunction due to lymphocytic infiltration. Its etiology is unknown. Although the most common symptoms are dryness of the eyes and mouth, any organ in the body may be affected during the disease course. When it occurs by itself, it is called primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS); if it occurs in association with another systemic autoimmune disease (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, or systemic sclerosis) it is called secondary Sjögren’s syndrome. A diagnosis is established based on a combination of signs, symptoms, and autoantibodies. Pulmonary involvement is common and may present prior to development of sicca symptoms or autoantibodies. Studies of novel therapeutic agents are needed.
