Disaster Preparedness for Seniors

Abstract

Nursing homes face multiple challenges in hurricanes, including determining whether to evacuate or shelter in place, protecting vulnerable residents from harm during an evacuation, and ensuring adequate staffing and power supplies while sheltering in place. These challenges, combined with the repeated occurrence of natural disasters, such as hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, and wildfires, demonstrate the need for a strategic approach that builds organizational resilience in long-term care settings. We propose a model based on a series of preparations steps that will enable nursing homes to develop organizational resilience and the ability to function as effectively as possible to protect their residents during disasters.
