Below are some rules for the use of for example:

  1. 1.

    use a comma before for example

  2. 2.

    if you have a list (two or more) of examples, then begin a new sentence after these examples

  3. 3.

    don’t use both such as and for example together. Use one or the other

  4. 4.

    for instance and like are not normally used in technical documents. Use for example

  5. 5.

    if you write for example after the example, rather than before, then it should be preceded and followed by commas. for example should never be placed at the end of the phrase
