Abstract
Nasal exam techniques allow for the proper diagnosis of rhinosinusitis and other nasal diseases in conjunction with proper historical details. This chapter details the necessary examination components for a proper nasal and sinus examination in the setting of a comprehensive head and neck examination. Anterior rhinoscopy with an otoscope can be adequate, but a nasal speculum with an external light source provides superior visualization for anterior rhinoscopy. Specially trained subspecialists often employ flexible and rigid endoscopy, which permits a complete examination of the nasal cavities and beyond. We describe in this chapter the relevant anatomic landmarks visualized during each type of nasal examination. Common pathologies of the nasal mucosa, nasal septum, turbinates, nasopharynx, and sinonasal cavities are reviewed. Additionally, tips on examination techniques and positioning, including pediatric-specific advice, provide the practitioner with enhanced diagnostic capabilities.
