Core Concepts in Dialysis and Continuous Therapies

Abstract

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is the dialysis modality most commonly prescribed worldwide to treat pediatric patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and also contributes substantially to the management of acute kidney injury (AKI) in children. Among pediatric patients, PD offers many advantages over hemodialysis, particularly in infants and young children. Although the underlying principles of PD in children are the same as in adults, there are many unique differences that directly impact management. These age-related differences require special consideration to ensure the adequacy of dialysis and to reduce the likelihood of complications.
