Hamstring and Quadriceps Injuries in Athletes

Abstract

Hamstring and quadriceps injuries are common to athletes and patients of all age ranges, genders, sports, and levels of competition. Due to the common nature of these injuries, there is a large amount of epidemiologic data looking at the incidence of this occurrence. Particular groups of athletes, such as professional soccer, football, rugby, track athletes, dancers, and water skiers, have received the most attention in evaluating the rate of hamstring injuries. Quadriceps injuries have been extensively evaluated in similar groups of athletes and patients. Specific focus has been on soccer, football, and rugby athletes with regard to strain of the quadriceps musculature. Additionally, the incidence of quadriceps tendon rupture and quadriceps contusions has been established, but less specific information is known about these entities. The following is an in-depth review of the current epidemiologic data concerning the occurrence of hamstring and quadriceps injuries amongst all categories of athletes.
