Abstract
The myopathies are non-dystrophic conditions in which the muscle does not function properly. This chapter focuses on some common adult-onset myopathies, including myofibrillar myopathy, distal myopathy, and metabolic myopathy. Myofibrillar myopathies present with slowly progressive muscle weakness of distal greater than proximal muscles. The distal myopathies are a heterogeneous group of disorders that predominantly affect the distal muscles. The metabolic myopathies are a heterogeneous group of inherited conditions with exercise intolerance and rhabdomyolysis leading to progressive muscle weakness, chronic pain, and fatigue.
