Abstract

The opening chapters of this book have been concerned with statistical data and methods of summarizing such data. We can think of such sample data as having been drawn from a larger ‘parent’ population. Conclusions from sample data about the populations (which is a branch of statistics called’ statistical inference’ see Chapter 8 onwards) must necessarily be made with some uncertainty since the sample cannot contain all the information in the population.

Dr Price estimates the chance in favour of the wife being the survivor in marriage as 3 to 2.
