Abstract

During the past decade there has been a rapid increase in research on the cytolytic effects and mode of action of various biological agents of low molecular weight such as polyene and macrocyclic antibiotics (Harold, 1970; Kinsky, 1970; Hamilton-Miller, 1973, 1974), protein substances such as complement-antibody systems (Kinsky, 1972; Müller-Eberhard, 1975), and a number of bacterial toxins endowed with potent hemolytic properties (Bernheimer, 1970, 1974).
