Materials Coding and Classification

  • P. J. H. Baily

The straightforward and obvious way of referring to people and things is to call them by their names. Despite this, we live in a coded world. Our telephones and cars have code numbers; our houses may soon have coded addresses; we ourselves are denoted by several codes — one for our bank account, another for Health Service purposes, and so on. At work we operate with many codes from the red paint which picks out fire-fighting equipment to wage numbers, account codes, part numbers and product codes, credit ratings, house numbers and materials codes.
