Abstract

In order to understand past and present trends in experimental neuroembryology, one should realize that this field did not originate as an offshoot of neurology: it has its roots in classical experimental embryology, from which it derived its problems, its concepts and its methodology. It is true that the founder of modern neurology, Ramon y Cajal, encompassed in his broad approach both neurogenesis and nerve regeneration. Yet, it was the general trend of inquiry into the causal factors of embryonic development with the aid of the analytical experiment which was inaugurated by W. Roux and gathered momentum in the first decades of this century that brought experimental neurogenesis into existence. Harrison and his associates brought this approach to bear on the special problems that are inherent in the nervous system, and their pioneer work laid the foundation to the investigations which will be in the center of the present discussion.

Some of the investigations of the author and his collaborators were supported by a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation and by Grants No. B463 and L-1801 from the National Institutes of Health, Public Health Service.
