Abstract

The title of this book is also that of the Silliman Lectures which Dr. Ross G. Harrison delivered in 1949 at Yale University. Prolonged illness prevented him from preparing this, his scientific testament, for publication. The editor of the book, Miss Sally Wilens, Dr. Harrison’s long-time research associate and friend, wisely chose not to reassemble the actual lectures from incomplete notes, but instead to republish five of Harrison’s major articles on which the six Silliman Lectures were based. Several of them were not readily accessible before. Some of Harrison’s lecture notes and comments are inserted in the text.
