Abstract
Some years ago, we developed a simple procedure that permitted us to demonstrate neunte outgrowth from cultured expiants of adult goldfish retina. It has since enjoyed considerable application in our laboratory as well as that of others, principally because it provides a vigorous outgrowth of neurites into an environment in which both the growth medium and the substratum can be manipulated experimentally. We describe here in some detail the experimental system, its properties, and several applications. It is particularly appropriate to review its origin in this volume honoring the many contributions of R.M. Gaze to developmental biology.
