Abstract
During the metabolism of 17α-hydroxy progesterone reduction of the double bond in ring A and the ketone groups at position 3 and 20 occurs, with the formation of pregnanetriol. In turn, 17α-hydroxy progesterone is derived by hydroxylation at the 17α-position of the primary hormone progesterone. As has been discussed earlier, the latter compound has been shown to be produced by the corpus luteum of the ovary, in rather large quantities by the human placenta, and by the adrenal gland. In general, there appears to be relatively little accumulation of pregnanetriol in normal circumstances.
