Abstract
As with all operations designed to cure reflux, the important features are to bring the lower oesophagus into the abdomen and for it to enter the stomach at an acute angle. Protecting the lower oesophageal sphincter against the effects of proximal gastric distension may also be important. The best accepted surgical procedures for achieving these aims are the Nissen fundoplication and the Belsey (Mark IV) operations. Other procedures which probably achieve similar aims, but which have not been as widely accepted, are described below.
