Abstract

Whilst the subject of satellite orbital parameters is extremely complex and may appear to the reader to be somewhat academic when considering the operation of GMDSS equipment, it will aid system understanding if the rudimentary principles of satellite orbits are considered. The space segment of the GMDSS currently includes two types of satellite each with a very different type of orbit. GMDSS distress alerting may be achieved using the COSPAS/SARSAT polar orbiting satellites which are only accessible for alerting purposes as the satellite passes within range of an EPIRB, and the geostationary orbiting (GEO) satellites which, as part of the Inmarsat organization, provide constant earth coverage for radio communications.
