Thermodynamic Properties near the Critical State

Abstract

The study of thermodynamic properties in the vicinity of the critical point has a venerable history of about a century. The Ph.D. thesis of van der Waals148, treating the continuity of the gaseous and liquid states, has provided the theoretical guidelines for the early experimental studies. They were carried out principally at the University of Leiden by Kamerlingh Onnes, Keesom, Verschaffelt, Crommelin and others, and with less intensity, at other institutions, such as the Physikalisch-Technische Reichsanstalt in Germany. After 1920, the interest in the subject slackened; there were some occasional flashes of very good experimental work, such as that of Michels and co-workers in Holland and of Maass and co-workers in Canada in the ‘thirties; of Murray and Mason, and of Schneider and co-workers in Canada in the ‘fifties; however, the true importance of this work became apparent only recently, after a considerable growth in theoretical understanding.
