Studies on the Neuroendocrine Control of Lactation

Abstract

It has been established in those species so far investigated that a functional anterior pituitary is essential for the processes of milk secretion (see reviews by Cowie, 1961; Cowie and Folley, 1961; Folley, 1961). Considerable restoration of milk secretion has been achieved in the hypophysectomized or anterior-lobectomized lactating rat with prolactin plus adrenocorticotrophin (ACTH) or adrenal corticosteroids (Cowie, 1957; Bintarningsih, Lyons, Johnson and Li, 1958; Cowie and Tindal, 1961a), while in the hypophysectomized lactating goat partial to complete restoration of lactation was achieved with a combination of prolactin, ox somatotropin (STH), insulin, tri-iodo-L-thyronine (LT3) and adrenal corticosteroid (Cowie and Tindal, 1960, 1961b; Cowie, Knaggs and Tindal, 1964). Confirmation of our results has been obtained by Gale and Larsson (1963) in goats ‘hypophysectomized’ by a collimated proton beam. In subsequent studies (Cowie and Tindal, 1965a), we have obtained evidence that the insulin may not be necessary for complete restoration of lactation in the hypophysectomized goat.
