The Circadian Rhythm in Female Reproduction

  • Chapter

Abstract

For a long time the rhythms in female reproductive functions and their seasonal periodicity have been well recognized, but it is only recently that the endogenous mechanisms responsible for these rhythmic changes have been fairly well understood (Jöchle, 1962 and 1963; Asdell, 1964; Nalbandov, 1964b). Within the last 20 years some of the exogenous factors have been identified which cause the seasonal variations in reproductive functions in horses (Nishikawa, 1959; Ortavant, Mauleon and Thibault, 1964), sheep, and goat (Yeates, 1949; Lamond, 1962; Ortavant et al., 1964), cattle (Mercier, 1947; van Loen, 1962; Kelly and Hurst, 1963; Bane, 1964; El-Baschary and Fewson, 1964), pigs (Corteel, Signoret and du Mensil du Buisson, 1964; Münch, 1964), and wildlife (Ortavant et al., 1964; Hollwich, 1964) and also the pathways by which these factors effect their remarkable influences (Tromp, 1963; Benoit, 1964; Gergen and MacLean, 1964; Hollwich, 1964). Comparatively recent is the concept that these rhythms are inborn and that environmental factors only modify their representation by inhibition or stimulation (Clegg, Cole and Ganong, 1964) thus ensuring optimal conditions for the maintenance of the species involved.
