Vacuum Microbalance Techniques

Abstract

This paper describes a helical-spring microbalance made of 3-mil tungsten wire and enclosed in a Pyrex glass housing. It was used in connection with a problem involving measurement of rates of thermal degradation of polymers in a vacuum by the loss-of-weight method. The balance has a sensitivity of about 550 ยต/mg and is so constructed as to avoid errors that might be caused by the thermal expansion of its parts or of the supports holding the balance and the cathetometer used in connection with it.
