Company Behavior in the Face of Dioxin Exposures

  • Michael Gough

Abstract

When the explosion took place in 1949 at the Monsanto factory in Nitro, West Virginia, the company, as noted earlier, had no full-time plant physician, so a part-time company physician and physicians in neighboring towns examined and treated the sick workers. But none of the doctors had had specialized training in occupational medicine. At that time, the speciality hardly existed in American medicine at all, and whatever there was of it was on a very low rung on of the medical hierarchy ladder.
