Glashow, Weinberg, and the Search for a Unified Field Theory

Abstract

For centuries this search has been the Holy Grail of philosophers, theologians, and scientists. Why this should be so has never been completely clear. As philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein said in the Blue Book, the differences between things can be as revealing as the similarities. Nevertheless, the idea of unity fascinates: perhaps it is because of the simplicity that unity implies.
