Within the last turn of the great year, the sum of written history has passed and much much more. Twenty-six thousand years ago, Neanderthal man was just dying out (or may have interbred with newcomers, although a new study refutes this hypothesis), and our ancestors, the Cro-Magnon people, had moved into Europe from Africa not long before. The most recent period of glaciation, called the Wisconsin Ice Age in America and the Würm Ice Age in Europe, was in place, with an ice cap spread across the northern half of Europe, Asia, and North America. A small portion of southwestern Wisconsin remained a kind of island mostly free of glaciers, hence the name.
