Abstract
Until the 1930s most of the new particles were detected in cosmic rays using cloud chambers or photographic emulsions. They were generated when energetic particles from outer space, mostly protons, collided with the particles of our upper atmosphere. But we had no control over these collisions. And it soon became evident that if further progress was going to be made we would have to produce our own energetic particles. To do this we would need accelerators.
