Abstract

We have explored the history of the Mauna Kea observatories—how they began and developed into the largest observatory complex in the world. And with work starting on the Japanese telescope, Gemini, and the Smithsonian Array, it will continue to grow for many years. We have also looked at home of the research that is going on there, research on black holes, cosmology, galaxies, quasars, clusters, stars, and closer to home, research on comets and the search for extraterrestrial life.
