Abstract

In the 1980s, when we hear the term “high technology,” we immediately think of electronics. In a world with satellite television, compact disc players, electronic appointment-calendar wristwatches, and powerful desktop computers, we are surrounded with seeming miracles of electronic technology. We have come to believe that today’s microchip designers can perform any magical feat we can dream up, and at affordable prices, no less. Customers for really high-perfor-mance electronics have the same thought in the backs of their minds: modern electronics can do anything.
