Abstract
Dr. Arthur G. Hoechst,* a flamboyant aggressive near-genius, backed by a large research team, is a certified “authority” in the expanding field of genetic modification; Professor Walter W. Woodside, a superb organic chemist, diplomatic and politically astute, participates actively in several panels of the National Academy of Sciences; Dr. Lemuel R. Groveland, introspective, introverted, and laboratory-oriented, has just received a regional award for contributions to understanding the nutrition of wood-eating cockroaches; and Dr. Alan W. Castell, high-energy physicist, has ongoing projects and collaborators at research centers in several countries. These four people are superficially disparate in every way but one—they seem to be succeeding as scientists.
