In this chapter we shall describe just a few of the many possible cryostats in which electrical resistivity experiments over the entire temperature range from helium up to ordinary temperatures may be carried out. We also describe some thermometers and procedures in common use for determining temperatures down to about 1°K, although, in keeping with the nature of this book, we deal chiefly with resistance thermometers. An account of the principal low-temperature thermocouples is nevertheless included, since they are the most practical of all low-temperature thermometers.
