The Delusional Misidentification Syndromes: Conceptual Framework and Areas of Research

The ancient Greek myth of Alcmene’s “innocent” infidelity has apparently provided the original denomination of the syndrome of Capgras, the most frequently encountered delusional misidentification sub-type. Capgras and Reboul-Lachaux (1923)termed this syndrome Illusion des “Sosies” and it was 6 years later that the syndrome acquired the denomination “syndrome de Capgras”, after the distinguished French psychiatrist Joseph Capgras.
