Abstract
Instead of the simple approaches to model-fitting given in Chapter 1, the method of maximum-likelihood is usually employed. In this chapter we describe the operation of this method, concentrating on the logit model as an illustration. More complex models are encountered in later chapters, and so there is some discussion of alternative numerical procedures that may be used for the maximum likelihood fitting of such models.
