Abstract
The average age of people over 15 years with mental handicaps who live in the family home is 30.06 years (SD 11.56). They are younger than those resident in institutions or other types of accommodation (average age 42.05; SD 16.70). Figure 5.1 compares the age distribution of people who live with their families with all other people with mental handicaps. More than 90% of those living at home are under age 45, whereas 64% of those living in places other than the family home are under the age of 45. This is not surprising, as the availability of a family home is normally dependent upon the survival and health of at least one of the parents, usually the mother.
