Independence training is an activity in which professionals such as Occupational Therapists (OTs) have been engaged for many years. Although OTs have not routinely been involved in the rehabilitation of blind and partially sighted people in the United Kingdom, they are in other countries. There are many concepts in theories of occupational therapy treatment which run parallel to those in theories of the rehabilitation of visually impaired people, and workers such as Trombly (1983) have outlined a number of main approaches to occupational therapy. Two of those are worth considering in relation to rehabilitation work, because they help us to understand the range of problems and solutions which rehabilitation can encompass.
