Pathogenetic Mechanisms of the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome

Abstract

A new syndrome characterized by a rare malignancy, Kaposi’s sarcoma, Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, and other severe opportunistic infections was reported by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Atlanta, in 1981 (CDC, 1981a,b,c). The profound impairment of cellular immune function underlying these disorders led to their designation as the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). This sexually transmitted disease with a mortality close to 100% over time has been considered “the worst pandemic of the 20th century.” Except for syphilis, no other infectious disease has depended so greatly on human behavior for its spread. In fact, in an attempt to communicate the threat of AIDS, researchers have sought to move away from placing those most at danger of infection in “risk groups” and have started to emphasize instead risk behavior. Since travel around the world has become faster, easier, and more frequent and because AIDS is becoming more of a heterosexually transmitted disease, it would be realistic to consider anyone as being at some degree of risk.
