Predation of Intertidal Fauna by Shorebirds in Relation to Time of the Day, Tide and Year

Behavioral Adaptation to Intertidal Life

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSA,volume 151))

Abstract

Shorebirds or waders, members of the Sub-Orders Scolopaci and Charadrii, are the most important bird predators of intertidal areas during their periods of exposure between successive high tides (Baird et al 1985). Some gulls (Laridae) and shelduck (Tadornidae) also forage intertidally, both when such areas are exposed and when they are covered by the tide. Certain diving ducks, particularly eiders (Somateridae), also feed on benthic intertidal animals, but only at high water when the rocks or flats are covered; and several heron spp. (Ardeidae) forage there.
