Abstract

One of the most rewarding aspects of a developing field is the opportunity it presents for new avenues of research. As the chapters in this volume illustrate, the field of language and law is especially rich in this respect, the richness coming both from the extraordinary breadth of disciplines involved and from the wealth of challenge that lies ahead. Although the studies here deal primarily with litigation, no aspects of American law are free from the influence of language: The challenge is to identify those aspects which are appropriate for study, and once the relevant linguistic variables are isolated, to investigate their actual influence on the legal process.
